Kentucky is currently holding nearly half a billion dollars in unclaimed funds!
Kentucky’s unclaimed money program started in 1942.
Unclaimed property includes personal property or financial assets such as
- abandoned savings and checking accounts
- non-cashed checks and travelers’ checks
- payroll checks
- unclaimed safety deposit boxes
- old life insurance policies
- stocks
- utility deposits
These assets are turned over to the state after a period time, usually three years.
In most cases, the owner of such property has forgotten that the particular property or account exists. Sometimes, an owner has died and the heirs don’t know about the property.
Treasure Finders Kentucky is a proactive outreach designed to locate Kentucky residents who may have unclaimed property.
The goal of the program is to increase the return of money to Kentucky citizens.
Each year the Kentucky State Treasury receives million of dollars from holders (such as banks and insurance companies) who by statute must transfer assets of inactive accounts. Efforts are made to notify the public that property is being held.
Each year about 20 percent is returned to owners.
