Unclaimed funds are any asset that has remained unclaimed for a specific period of time, usually three to five years.
Unclaimed funds consists of:

The list of reasons is almost endless, but it happens ever day.

The West Virginia State Treasurer also has an online auction for unclaimed funds. This is done to free up valuable storage storage space. So, the office periodically auctions off contents of safety deposit boxes held in unclaimed funds accounts. The proceeds from the auction are then held in the account of the original property owner.
