Illinois is currently holding over $2.1 billion in unclaimed funds!
Unclaimed funds consists of money and/or property being held by businesses and other financial institutions that have gone dormant for a specified period of time and are then turned over to the State.
Unclaimed funds may include:
- checking and savings accounts
- uncashed wage and payroll checks
- uncashed stock dividends and stock certificates,
- insurance payments
- utility deposits
- customer deposits
- accounts payable
- credit balances
- refund checks
- money orders
- traveler’s checks
- mineral proceeds
- court deposits
- uncashed death benefit checks
- life insurance proceeds
Funds can go unclaimed for a variety of reasons including:
- Forgetting about a bank account
- Not collecting a final paycheck from a job
- Forgetting about a utility deposit on an apartment, house or business
- Not knowing about an insurance payment
- Not knowing about an inheritance
The list of reasons goes on and on.
Most of these funds are from accounts belonging to people that have been inactive for at least five years, sometimes three years.
Once the funds are in the custody of the State, it will hold onto them in perpetuity until the owners of the funds, or their heirs, come forward to collect them.
