There are about 25 million people in Texas and about 6 million names on the list of unclaimed money in Texas.

That means approximately one in four Texans have unclaimed money being held for them!

For a little background information, unclaimed property is defined as “any financial asset that has been abandoned by the owner for one or more years”.
Now, you may ask “why would someone abandon their own money?”. Well for the most part they don’t do it on purpose!


For instance, some examples of Texas unclaimed money include:

  • Dividend, payroll or cashier’s checks
  • Stocks, mutual fund accounts, bonds
  • Utility deposits and other refunds
  • Bank accounts and safe deposit box contents
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Mineral interest or royalty payments
  • Court deposits, trust funds, escrow accounts

Now, take a look the third item “utility deposits and other refunds”. Let’s say you moved into a house or an apartment and needed to get the electricity in your own name. The electric/utility company may have asked for a deposit before starting up your service. Now let’s say you lived there for several years and decided to move out. By this time, you have probably long forgotten about your utility deposit. If you move out and the utility company does not have a forwarding address or for some unknown reason on their end are not able to get you your deposit back, they are required by law to turn it over to the state.

In Texas, unclaimed money is turned over after one year. This is just one example of how your money might end up on the Texas unclaimed money list.

Claim Processing Time

It takes approximately 90 to 120 days  (see comment below) to process an original owner claim once it is received at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, if no additional information is needed. Certain claims may take longer.

Technically, there is no deadline for claiming Texas unclaimed property. In fact, if the owner has passed away, heirs can legally claim their family’s assets. But abandoned items pile up extremely quickly, and the state has a very limited amount of space in which to store these items. After every possible method to contact the owner has been exhausted over several years, something has to be done.

Texas does need help in contacting the six million people owed unclaimed money. The state cannot do it all themselves.

The City of Houston, TX has their own list of unclaimed money.

The list has 410,000 names on it. This list only contains amounts under $100. Anything over $100 is turned over to the States unclaimed money division.

Still, if you live or have lived or worked in Houston, it doesn’t hurt to check to see if you have some money owed to you.

Indiana Unclaimed Funds

Indiana has over $800 million in unclaimed funds!

There are over 8 million accounts.

Each year, millions of dollars in assets are turned over to the Office of the Indiana Attorney General as unclaimed property. It’s their  job to help return these assets to their rightful owners.

Any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time is considered unclaimed property.

Unclaimed property consists of certain financial assets-as defined by Indiana state statute IC 32-34-that have been abandoned by their owners for an extended period of time. Examples of unclaimed property include:

  • Dormant bank accounts
  • Lost or forgotten uncashed checks
  • Stocks or bonds, dividends and bond interest
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Utility refunds
  • Safe deposit box contents



Individuals or businesses may lose track of assets if:

  • A change of residence or business relocation occurs, and an updated address is not provided, or an account or deposit is simply left behind.
  • A check is received and accidentally discarded, lost or forgotten.
  • A rightful owner dies and relatives are unaware of a bank account, safe deposit box or stock owned by the deceased.
  • Notification of a divorce or marriage is not provided.
  • A clerical error at a company alters a former employee’s name or address, resulting in returned mail.

In accordance with Indiana law, property is considered “unclaimed” when the holder of the asset, after a legally specified period, is unable to find or contact the owner.

The law requires business entities and others to review their records each year to determine whether they are in possession of any abandoned funds, securities, or other property that is reportable, and to prepare an annual report of abandoned property.

Before it is turned over to the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, unclaimed property is in the possession of holders who are responsible for reporting on behalf of their branches, divisions, and other affiliated entities.

A holder is a bank, insurance company or other business or organization in possession of property that has remained unclaimed for a given length of time. The holder most turn over the property to the Indiana attorney general’s Unclaimed Property Division after attempts at contacting the rightful owner have been unsuccessful.

Common holders include:

  • Financial institutions, including any bank, trust company, savings bank, safe-deposit company, private banker, savings and loan association, credit union and cooperative bank. Both state and federally chartered institutions are required to report holdings.
  • All business associations of two or more individuals, both for-profit and not-for-profit, including corporations, joint stock companies, business trusts, partnerships, cooperatives and other associations.
  • Utilities owned or operated for public use.
  • Other legal entities, both for-profit and not-for-profit, including governments, political subdivisions, public authorities, public corporations, estates, trusts, or any other legal or commercial entities.

The Office of the Indiana Attorney General publishes the names of all unclaimed property owners (as reported by the holder) in newspapers across the state, broken up by county.  According to state law, properties turned over in a given calendar year must appear in the newspaper by Nov. 30 of the following year.

Colorado Unclaimed Funds

Colorado is holding hundreds of  millions of dollars in unclaimed funds!

There are almost two million accounts due money.

These names are for individuals as well as for businesses.

Unclaimed funds are unclaimed or abandoned intangible property. It represents a certain obligation a company is holding for another person or business.

It includes:

    • checking and saving accounts
    • certificates of deposit
    • over payments
    • insurance checks
    • payroll checks
    • utility refunds
    • money orders
    • un-cashed checks
    • dividends
    • stocks
    • bonds
    • contents of safe deposit boxes and more.



Unclaimed funds are turned over to the State to protect them and return them to its rightful owner(s) or their heirs. Once received by his office, the Treasurer guarantees that the claimants who properly prove rightful ownership will receive their property back, even if the original financial institution or business closes.

For the convenience of the property’s rightful owner(s), people trying to locate forgotten bank accounts or other property in Colorado can find them by searching the website or with just one call.

The State has what they call the Great Colorado Payback where you can search for your Colorado unclaimed money. Besides the site where you can search for yourself, the Treasurer also publishes the list in newspapers, as well as distributing it to libraries, county treasurer offices, and state legislators.

Most money is turned over to the State when it has been considered dormant for a certain time period. It is usually three years.

Certificates of Deposit (CD) and Individual Retirement Accounts become unclaimed after being dormant for five years.

There is no time limit to claim your unclaimed money.
