The Today Show ran a segment on unclaimed money and how you can claim yours.

Here are TODAY financial editor Jean Chatzky’s tips on how you can find out if you have any unclaimed funds — and how to file a claim:

  1. Do a free search on the websites missingmoney.com and unclaimed.org, which are both endorsed by NAUPA. The sites feature collective records from all state-held unclaimed property.
  2. Check the treasury website for the state you live in and any other ones you have resided in in the past.
  3. When doing the search, make sure to type in all the places you have lived. Also, if you’re married, make sure to check under your maiden name as well. Using a first initial and your last name is also encouraged to make sure everything comes up.
  4. It’s up to you if you want to use a third-party service to claim your money, but it’s not required. Each state has its own process, which usually takes three to four months and requires information like your social security number and more. If you choose to use a locator business to claim your money in order to avoid doing the paperwork yourself, don’t pay up front. Also, don’t pay the company more than 10 percent or 20 percent of the amount of money you are claiming.
  • Search IRS.gov for any possible refund money from the Internal Revenue Service because undeliverable mail is often an issue for the IRS.
  • In a search for any unclaimed pension money, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. has a searchable database to find an unclaimed pension.
  • Treasuryhunt.gov will help you search for any unclaimed savings bonds and payments.
  • For any potentially unclaimed life insurance claims or payments, check your individual insurer’s website.

The dollar total they display is the actual total amount they have listed in their database. You will need to perform your own due-diligence & verify these funds listed are for you and not for someone else who shares a name with you.

Their optional paid premium subscription goes FAR beyond a simple database search. They will help you with the entire claims process! They provide complete instructions, guides, sample claim forms & instructional ebooks to assist you with the claims process. They even provide a live session with an asset recovery specialist to help you through what can be a complicated & confusing process.

CashUnclaimed.com contains one of the largest databases for unclaimed money in the world.  Their current database lists billions of dollars in unclaimed money, property, accounts and assets from all 50 states and several Federal agencies that could belong to you.

They are not an unclaimed property locator service (as we are) and do not charge you a percentage of the money you claim (as we do).

Marriage Certificates
Death Certificates
Proof of Previous Addresses

Dude, Where’s My Refund Tax?

Dude-Wheres-My-CarRefund tax? Did you mean your tax refund.

I don’t know, it could be me, but millions of people are searching for their “refund tax”.

I’m assuming they are referring to their IRS tax refund, but not to confuse anyone, that’s what I am going to call it.

The IRS is currently holding billions in this unclaimed money. There are two main reasons for this:

1. The person that filed the claim moved after filing it, and
2. The person never filed a claim but has overpaid on their taxes and has money owed to them.

There are several things you should know to track down your refund:


1. Go to Where’s My Refund?

It’s the fastest and easiest way to get information on your federal income refund tax

2. If you e-file, you should be able to check within 72 hours of filing. If you mailed in your return, you can check in three to four weeks, so if you want it quickly, e-filing is the way to go.

3. When checking, have your tax return handy. You will either need your social security number, filing status, or dollar amount on the return. There’s nothing worse than waiting on hold for information, finding out you don’t have everything necessary, and then having to call back again.

4. Once you enter your information, you may get a choice of responses including:

  • Your refund is being processed
  • The mailing date of your refund
  • They could not deliver your refund because of an incorrect address.If this is the case, you are able to correct that online.If you feel you have an unclaimed IRS refund waiting for you, now is the time to check. The window of opportunity is only three years, then Uncle Sam gets to keep the money for themselves.What are you waiting for?
