Louisiana is currently holding over $900 million in unclaimed funds!

Each year millions of dollars are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office by businesses who are unable to contact property owners.

Unclaimed funds can consist of:

• forgotten bank accounts
• unpaid wages
• securities
• life insurance payouts
• uncashed checks
• proceeds of safe deposit boxes
• utility deposits

and many other items.

Funds go unclaimed for a variety of reasons including

• moving without getting your utility deposit back
• not claiming a final paycheck
• not knowing about an insurance payout
• not knowing about an inheritance.

The Louisiana Treasury site allows you to search the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Database to determine if they are holding unclaimed assets belonging to you or your family or business.

All claims made with the office must include positive proof of ownership.  This could be either by verifying the Social Security Number, verifying a current and/or previous address or proving an association with the holder.

If the address listed is your address or a previous address, you must submit a claim with a copy of your driver’s license or other picture ID, Social Security number (required) and proof of the previous address. If you have never lived at the address listed, there is a very good possibility this money does not belong to you.

The Treasury does not publish dollar amounts to protect the privacy of the owners.  You can obtain more information about an item by clicking on the Property ID number, but this will only reveal an amount range.  The amount ranges displayed are: under $25.00, $25.00 to $50.00, $50.00 to $100.00, over $100.00
