The county of San Diego is currently holding over one million dollars in unclaimed funds.
They are being held with the Accounts Payable Division of the Auditor and Controller. This money belongs to individuals and organizations that have done business or received services from the County.
The unclaimed funds being held consist of checks/warrants that remain uncashed for a period of more than six months. They are usually the result of checks/warrants that are returned as undeliverable by the post office. Often, they payee has moved and has not left a forwarding address or the forwarding order has expired.
Additionally, checks/warrants may remain uncashed for a wide variety of reasons including, but not limited to, being lost or destroyed. The most common types of unclaimed monies include, but are not limited to, supplier payments for goods or services.

The County of San Diego is required to release the funds only to the rightful payee. The payees must provide proper documentation to validate their claims to ensure that no one but them can receive the unclaimed funds. Payees can claim their funds directly from the County without any service fees or charges.
If you’ve reviewed the Unclaimed Funds listing and determined that you may have funds belonging to yourself or your business, you can print a Request for Unclaimed Monies Form
On the request for unclaimed monies form, the following fields must be filled in completely in order to process the claim:
- Check/Warrant Number
- Amount
- Payee Full Name/Business Name
- Social Security Number/Taxpayer ID
- Street Address
- City
- State
- Zip
- County
- Daytime Phone
- Claimant or Authorized Agent Signature
- Date
- Address of Residence previous 3 years
If you are filing a claim for which their are multiple payees on the check/warrant, each payee must sign the claim form and submit the required documentation. Your signature will need to be notarized if your claim exceeds $500.
You must provide the following documentation when filing a claim:
Individuals
- A copy of the current photo identification for each payee
- Verification of address
Business
- Copy of current phone identification of the authorized agent signing the form
- Letter of Authorization on company letterhead with the names of the officers or officials with authority to sign and claim on behalf of the business
- If your company merged with another company, a copy of the merger agreement
- If your company was dissolved, a copy of the articles of dissolution
Heir or Asset Finders (more on this below)
- A notarized Power of Attorney Signed by the same person who signed the claim(s)
- A copy of the Agreement between the Asset Finder and the claimant
