Did you know that there is currently more than $1.3 Billion in IRS unclaimed tax money?
It’s true, and it belongs to over 1.3 million tax payers that did not file for a refund. There is a three year deadline, which really equates to a four year gap, between filing your money and losing it to the government.
Unlike unclaimed state money which is held in perpetuity until it is claimed by it’s owner, IRS unclaimed tax money goes back to the government if it is not claimed.
I say there is actually a four year gap, because if you didn’t file your tax return in 2006, you have until April 15th of 2010 to file it.
If you didn’t file your tax return in 2007, you have until 2011. No return in 2008, you have until 2012, etc., etc.
So, just as the above newscast from 2011 mentions unclaimed tax money from 2007, a similar story run in 2012 would talk about unclaimed tax money in 2008.

The IRS has forms available to file for prior years.
Just go to the IRS prior years filing page and download the form(s) you need.
If you do not file and are owed money, there is no penalty, but you lose out on getting money that is rightfully yours.

If it is being held by any of the states, start here:
https://unclaimed-funds.org/ . Click on any of the states you may have lived in, worked in, etc., and search for your name.
If that doesn’t work go to https://unclaimed-funds.org/free-search/ and check out the federal sites and do searches.
If that doesn’t work, how about calling the DOJ and asking them where they may have send the funds. Have you done that already?
I Received a legimant 2007 refund check and I’m not sure why . I deposited it in my savings account. How long do I have before I can spend?
last year I found a site that looks for unclaimed funds for people. I did not keep the information as it was lost is my last move. anyway,.was found that the DOJ had a tidy little sum of money that was reclaimed from a scammer who promised in court to pay the people back who he stole it from. I unfortunately was one of them. I can no longer find the site nor any info from DOJ. I need a form to claim this cash and do not have a clue where to start.
