Kansas Unclaimed Funds

By unclaimedfunds 32 Comments

The State of Kansas is holding over $400 million in unclaimed funds!

Every year thousands of people lose track of their bank accounts, cash, stocks, bonds, refunds, royalties, safe deposit boxes and other property.

People move and forget to give their bank, broker, employer or insurance company  a forwarding address.

It is the Kansas Treasurer’s job to locate the rightful owners and heirs to these funds.

Unclaimed money can include:

  • Court deposits
  • Dormant checking accounts
  • Dormant savings accounts
  • Insurance benefits
  • Oil and gas royalties
  • Safe deposit box contents
  • Stock and cash dividends
  • Utility deposits
  • Wages

It costs nothing to do a search and file a claim for your money.
Most courthouses contain a list of unclaimed money.

You can go here to do a search for unclaimed money being held in Kansas

You can also call the Kansas Cash Connection at 1-800-432-0386 or (785) 296-4165 and ask them to check your name for you.

You can also send a letter to:
Kansas State Treasurer
Unclaimed Property Division
900 SW Jackson, Suite 201
Topeka, Kansas 66612-1235

or go to the contact page at https://kansascash.ks.gov/contact_us.html

Wade, as long as they get the money first and then you pay them a percentage, that is fine, but don’t pay any money up front.

I have found my unclaimed money but they want me to provide addresses that dont exist. A couple are vacant lots and some are commercial property. Question; If a submission has no address and is from another state, howdoes it end up in Kansas?

State of Kansas no longer allows unclaimed money finders. After making a formal request, I got this from the Deputy State Treasurer:

Under the Kansas Open Records Act (K.S.A. 45-215 et. seq.); we are declining to release these records to you in accordance with K.S.A. 45-230. This statute provides civil penalties for anyone providing information to someone who we know will use the information for commercial purposes. K.S.A. 45-230 is a privacy statute that applies to all public records, not just our database. Using information for a commercial purpose is defined as soliciting individuals listed to provide your services. In addition, K.S.A. 45-221(a) (30) allows this office to refuse to produce records containing “information of a personal nature where the public disclosure thereof would constitute an invasion of personal privacy.” This office maintains its database on a website that is accessible to the public while protecting personal information such as the dollar value of the property held and Social Security numbers. This website balances the individual right to privacy against providing the accessibility necessary to help owners locate their unclaimed property. It makes the database accessible on an individual inquiry basis in order to limit commercial use of the database.

      James,
Yes, that is correct. Did you go to https://moneyfinderbiz.com/kansas/ before making your request? It could have saved you a lot of time! The first sentence on the page says “It does not pay to search for Kansas unclaimed money as a finder”. Now, just because you may live in Kansas (not sure) and you want to be an unclaimed money finder, it doesn’t mean that you can’t, it just means that you can’t search in Kansas. You can look in plenty of other states though!

      Samuel,
I don’t know your fathers name but there are several Maags on the list in Kansas, https://www.kansascash.com/prodweb/up/ownr_1.php and also in Missouri, https://treasurer.mo.gov/UnclaimedProperty/SearchResults.aspx?name=MAAG, so you may want to start there.
