The State of Wisconsin is holding millions of dollars in unclaimed funds!
These funds can consist of:
- Savings accounts
- Checking accounts
- Uncashed dividends
- Stocks and mutual funds
- Customer deposits or overpayments
- Certificates of deposit
- Credit balances
- Matured Life insurance policies
- Utility Deposits
- Unclaimed Wages
The list goes on and on.
Funds become unclaimed when there isn’t any activity on the account, called the dormancy period. Depending on the type of account, most dormancy periods are from one to five years.
If the holder of the funds does not make contact with the owner as a result of due diligence, the funds are turned over to the Department of Revenue.
Funds can go unclaimed for a variety of reasons including:
- Leaving a job and not claiming a final paycheck
- Moving without getting your utility deposit back
- Forgetting about a savings account
- Forgetting you had a bond
- Not knowing about an inheritance.
- Not claiming a credit owed from a business
